Confused about English qualifications? Let’s make it simple. Here’s what you need to know about the National 5 English Equivalent.

The basics

National 5 English is a Scottish exam, usually sat by 15–16 year olds. The National 5 English Equivalent in the rest of the UK is the GCSE English Language at grade C/4.

National 4 and beyond

National 5 is the next step up from National 4 English (Scotland). It also includes the applications of English (National 5), which are all about communication skills that you’ll use in life and work.

Why it matters

The National 5 English Equivalent is accepted across the UK, so it’s essential for jobs, apprenticeships, or study.

Need to resit?

No stress. You can resit National 5 in Scotland or GCSE English elsewhere. Adults can also take Functional Skills English Level 2 to reach the same level.

Wrap-up

The National 5 English Equivalent equals a GCSE English pass at grade C/4. At Functional Skills Maths Level 2, learners get the guidance and resources needed to succeed.
